The robust privet is very popular with us. We show what you should pay attention to when planting private hedges about planting time, location, and the like.

Privet ( Ligustrum ) enriches the garden not only with the fragrant white flowers in summer or the dark, shiny berries in autumn and winter. The animals he brings into the garden are also a wonderful asset and a joy to watch.

As soon as you have acquired your plants, you can finally get active. Think carefully about the right place for your private. Keep in mind that you need to keep a certain distance from your neighbors when planting hedges. Once the perfect location has been found, let’s get down to work.

When to plant privet

The right time to plant private is in autumn, ideally October. At this time it rains a lot and the young plants need a lot of water, in the beginning, to grow well.

Alternatively, planting in spring is also possible. However, this has the disadvantage that you may have to water a lot if the spring is dry. For planting, choose the evening or a cloudy day, when the sun is not too hot, to protect the plants for the first hours after planting.

Planting privet: the right location

Privet has no special requirements for its location. The soil should be permeable to water, as the plant does not tolerate waterlogging. The plant particularly likes a slightly alkaline pH value. As for the light, private is comfortable in the sun. He has nothing against penumbra, however. In theory, you can even plant your privet in the shade, but there is a risk of it becoming bald over time.

Planting privet: the right approach

It doesn’t take much to plant a privet. However, bare-rooted plants should be placed in water for a few hours before planting. To plant, dig a hole about twice as wide and twice as high as the root ball. Then mix the excavated soil with compost, manure, or long-term fertilizers such as our Plantura organic universal fertilizer. You can then fill up the lower part of the planting hole with some excavation. So the soil under the plant is well loosened. The plant itself should be replanted at the same level at which it previously grew. You can now distribute the remaining excavated material around the root ball and then press it down gently. Then all that’s left is to pour on – and you’re done.

If you don’t just want to plant single privet, but an entire hedge, you should absolutely keep the planting spacing. The Privet should be placed 40 to 50 centimeters apart, depending on how high you want your hedge to be. Small-stature varieties such as the dwarf Guster ( Ligustrum vulgare ‘Lodense’) can be planted a little more densely, about 30 centimeters apart. Also, note that you should leave enough space in front of and behind the hedge because the hedge also grows in width. At least 50 centimeters should be planned here.

Summary privet planting:

  • Place bare-rooted plants in water for a few hours
  • Maintain the planting distance, if necessary mark planned holes
  • Dig the planting hole about twice the size of the root ball
  • Enrich the excavation with a little compost, manure, organic universal fertilizer
  • Fill the bottom of the planting hole with a little loose excavation
  • Insert the plant
  • Fill the planting hole with excavated material and press down lightly
  • Pouring on

Care for privet after planting

After planting, one thing counts above all:

  1. Sufficient watering until the young plants are well-rooted.
  2. Over time, you can then reduce the amount of watering.
  3. A cut is theoretically possible very soon, but it is questionable whether this already makes sense.
