Lantana Camara is a beautiful, flowering shrub. The special thing about it: You change the color of the flowers in summer. The perennial plant grows larger over the years and blooms more profusely every year. So that you can enjoy your convertible rose for many years, you have to bring the tropical plant safely through the cold winter. But are convertible florets hardy? Which location is suitable for wintering? And how do you care for convertible florets in winter? We answer all of these questions in this article.

To get to the bottom of the question of whether convertible florets can survive our cold and frosty winters without any problems, it is worth taking a look at the origin of the plant. Lantana Camara is native to the tropical regions of the American continent. That means she likes it warm and sunny all year round. However, we do not meet these requirements. If you want to cultivate your convertible rose for more than a year, you have to react in good time. If the temperatures drop below 5 ° C, it is time to bring the convertible rose into the warm.
Cut convertible florets for the winter
To optimally prepare your convertible rose for winter, it needs to be pruned in autumn. This has many advantages: The plant goes into hibernation more easily, it has fewer plant parts above ground, and therefore requires less water and nutrients. And it takes up less space in winter quarters. How the rose is pruned depends on where it spends the winter.
If you move to a bright winter quarter, you don’t have to cut back as much as you would with a dark winter. First, remove any dead leaves. For a dark hibernation, cut all shoots back radically to a few centimeters. In light wintering, the plant is only shortened by a third on all shoots. Finally, tie the shoots together with a piece of rope to minimize the evaporation area of the plant.

The ideal location for the wintering of convertible florets
When the days get shorter and the nights colder, it’s time to fetch the convertible rose from the garden and bring it to its winter quarters. As soon as the temperatures drop below 5 ° C, it will be too cold for the plant outside. As already mentioned, there is the option of hibernating the convertible rose in light or dark. Light winter storage at temperatures between 5 and 10 ° C is ideal.
The ideal conditions for this are found in a cold house or an unheated winter garden. Here the rose gets enough light, but it is not too warm. In the living room, it is usually warmer than 10 ° C and the plant then does not go into hibernation. It is better to spend the winter in a dark place such as in the basement or in a garage, where there is no light but the temperatures are right. Outside, the green rose cannot be overwintered at all, as it dies at temperatures below freezing point. You should therefore dig up planted convertible florets with the root ball in autumn and overwinter in the pot.

Maintain convertible roses in winter
Even if the convertible rose is in hibernation, it cannot do without the attention. Although growth is significantly reduced, the plant should not dry out. Basically, you only need to water moderately in winter. In warm places, such as the living room, this is of course more often necessary than in a dark and colder cellar.
The tropical plant does not need any fertilizer in winter. If Lantana Camara is warm over the winter, you should spray it with lukewarm water twice a week. It is also important to regularly check the plant for pest infestation during the winter. Especially in less than optimal winter locations, there are ideal conditions for annoying pests to spread. Unfortunately, spider mites ( Tetranychidae ) and scale insects ( Coccoidea ) are only too happy to nestle in greenery.
With regular checks, however, you can quickly identify an infestation and react accordingly. To prepare the florets in good time for spring, it is made lighter and warmer as early as February. So the plant sprouts again early.
