The Muscadet variety with white flowers and purple grain

101 Types Of Lilies: Beautiful, Colorful And Hardy Species

Lilies are traditional and popular ornamental plants. We present their types with the most beautiful colors as well as hardy lilies. Some types of lilies ( Lilium ) are among the oldest ornamental plants. However, if you look at the large, elegant flowers of the lilies, you immediately understand why the plants have aroused the interest of enthusiastic flower lovers for so long.

Nowadays there are nine divisions in lily breeding, which serve to classify over 2000 species as well as their varieties and hybrids. Eight of the divisions apply to the hybrids and provide information about the cross-ability between the species. The intensive crossing resulted in varieties in all possible flower colors and shapes. These varieties do not only differ externally, however. They have different demands on the location and are sometimes more, sometimes less winter hardy. We will help you find a particularly beautiful species for pot culture or the garden.

The 10 most beautiful types of lily with countless varieties

One can supposedly argue about beauty. Which of the countless species and their hybrids are the most beautiful depends of course on individual taste. With such a selection of flower colors, shapes, and sizes, one thing is certain: every flower lover will find a variety that will open their hearts. Oriental and Asian hybrids in particular form colorful, large flowers that literally compete for the attention of their viewers.

  1. Hello, dear garden fans,

with lilies, I do not know so well yet, and after 2020 was a beautiful lily year for me, they let me down this year.

About 2/3 of the bulbs came not only bloom in larger pots and outdoors.
Whether it was the weather, the soil, the bulbs themselves, or me, I don’t know.

I know only from a part of the lilies the name – one is L. regale in white and L. regale “Pink Perfection”.

I have now bought a few more bulbs, including “Apollo” and “Acapulco”.

Is it at all recommended to plant them already now in autumn in my often quite wet soil because of the danger of rotting?

Who can tell about his experiences ( also in pots)?
I am looking forward to your ( hopefully arriving 😉 ) tips on planting, fertilizing 🙂

    1. What is your garden soil like? clayey/loamy/sandy?

I also have problems with lilies in pots. however, my experiences relate to wild lilies, some of which are very delicate. I also grow lily seedlings in smaller plastic pots. the problem is always the wetting of the substrate. i can’t carry the pots back and forth every day, depending on the weather. i don’t have a rain-protected shelter (yet). In larger (clay) pots, where adult lilies are kept, substrate watering may not be such a problem. the rainy summer + your described failures at least suggest that roots or worse the bulbs have been damaged. have you ever dug some up to check the condition?
