Garden Fertilizer: The Right Fertilizer For Your Garden

76 / 100

In order for your own garden to become a green paradise, the plants need sufficient nutrients. We reveal what is important when it comes to garden fertilizer.

Not everyone is lucky enough to own a high-yielding compost heap or a horse stable full of fragrant horse manure. If you want to buy garden fertilizer to fertilize your garden with it, you will find a decision aid here.

A garden fertilizer needs to be chosen carefully because it is used a lot and often. We explain what to look out for and whether mineral and mainly organic fertilizers are equally suitable.

What should you watch out for with garden fertilizers?

The garden as a place of application places high demands on fertilizers. The soil fertility should be maintained or even increased by him. Nor should it have any negative effects on nature that populates the garden: beneficial insects, mammals and birds, soil life, and of course pets and children playing should not be exposed to any danger. Especially when the fertilizer is used on vegetables that will later end up on our plates, choosing an organic fertilizer is the best. In addition, it must be taken into account that garden fertilizer is bought in larger quantities than fertilizer for house plants – this means that the price is more important for you and the compatibility with the environment. Last but not least, the information available about the fertilizer, the ease of use (e.g. the long-term effect of the fertilizer), and the service provided by the manufacturer are important decision-making criteria.

What should you watch out for with garden fertilizers?

  • Soil fertility should be preserved
  • Harmless to humans and nature
  • price
  • Ease of use, long-term effect
  • Ecological compatibility, organic quality
  • Product information and service from the manufacturer

Garden fertilizers in comparison

A large number of different fertilizers are available in every hardware store and on the Internet, which differs in brand, area of application, price, and quality. These can be roughly divided into two categories: mineral fertilizers and wholly or primarily organic fertilizers. We explain to what extent these two categories meet the above requirements.

Mineral garden fertilizer

  • Unfortunately, mineral fertilizers do not maintain soil fertility. They strongly stimulate soil life, which promotes the breakdown of organic material and humus – because they themselves do not bring anything with them that the strongly increased soil organisms could otherwise consume. After long use of mineral fertilizers, a soil with a reduced humus content remains, which itself can store and release less water and nutrients.
  • In most cases, mineral fertilizers are not directly harmful to humans or nature. However, there are also inferior products that contain phosphorus compounds contaminated with cadmium or even uranium. And in the long term, the deterioration in soil quality and the impoverishment of soil life are of course harmful to the environment.
  • The price of mineral fertilizers in relation to the nutrient concentrations they contain is almost always lower than that of organic or organic mineral fertilizers. In return, however, the user accepts that the soil fertility will decrease as a result of the use.
  • Mineral garden fertilizers have some disadvantages in their application: on the one hand, wearing gloves when applying the concentrated salts is mandatory, on the other hand, the dosage must be very precise. If too much nutrient salt is distributed, there will be slight to severe over-fertilization, which can also cause plants to perish completely.
  • The production of mineral fertilizers is unfortunately not sustainable: Nitrogen is extracted from the air with high energy expenditure using the Haber-Bosch process, all other nutrients are broken down from finite, fossil deposits and also converted into an easily soluble form with high energy consumption.
  • Mineral fertilizers are priced in the lower segment and good customer care is not included in the price, especially with low-price brands.
Conclusion: As garden fertilizers, mineral fertilizers are not a good permanent solution.

Mainly Organic Garden Fertilizer

  • Preserving soil fertility: In addition to the necessary nutrients, mostly organic garden fertilizers also bring organic material into the soil, which microorganisms serve as food and humification as the basis for new hummus. In this way, soil fertility is preserved.
  • Harmless to humans and nature: Fertilizers from slaughterhouse waste, in particular, have long been viewed with suspicion because of the possible transmission of animal diseases. What is certain is that the horns and claws of commercially kept animals can contain residues from administered antibiotics. In addition, in the vast majority of cases, the raw materials for organic fertilizers come from commercial farming and the origin of the processed animals cannot be traced. Animal-free, mainly organic fertilizers are the ethically and ecologically better alternative here. By the way, our organic fertilizers are 100 percent animal-free.
  • Price: Primarily organic fertilizers are generally more expensive than mineral fertilizers in terms of the concentration of nutrients they contain. In return, they not only provide nutrients but also maintain or promote the quality of the soil. The slightly higher price is worth it in terms of the long-term soil quality.
  • Ease of use: Some organic fertilizers are simply finely ground organic material, which should accelerate the implementation in the soil. First ground and then granulated fertilizers are better suited for spreading because they are easier to spread and do not generate dust. And then there is the smell: fertilizers from slaughterhouse waste stink badly, not so vegetable fertilizers.
  • Ecological compatibility: Compared to the production of mineral fertilizers, primarily organic fertilizers are in any case more environmentally friendly. Since animal husbandry requires significantly more space and resources than the production of plants, variants made from vegetable raw materials are recommended.
  • Product information and service: The market for mainly organic fertilizers is still dominated by a few large, often idealistically oriented manufacturers. They usually have the resources and the will to communicate with customers and offer them the best possible service.
