Calathea species: Calathea orbifolia

The Calathea orbifolia is one of the most popular Calathea species. Its dark green leaves are adorned with symmetrical, light green to silver-gray longitudinal stripes. The rounded, wavy leaves have a silvery green underside. The Calathea orbifolia is up to 100 cm high and is, therefore, one of the largest species. In her, the nyctinasty – the leaf movement between day and night – is particularly pronounced.
Calathea ornata
The Calathea ornata is a very special species. Its leaves are colored dark green on the upper side and provided with symmetrical pink stripes that are somewhat reminiscent of pinstripes: The species name ornata does not mean “decorated” for nothing. The underside of the leaf of Calathea ornata is dark red in color. The ‘Beauty Star’ variety, in particular, has beautiful foliage. The plant becomes wider than it is tall: a low 40 to 50 cm is the final height of the decorated basket margin. For this, however, it develops all the longer leaves – one can be as long as 60 cm.
Calathea warscewiczii
The Calathea warscewiczii is native to the tropical regions of Central America. The velvety dark green leaves have light green or reddish leaf markings and are dark red on the underside. Calathea warscewiczii often produces brilliant white flowers in our latitudes in January or February. The plant needs more space than most other Calathea species because it can grow up to 200 cm high and also very wide.

Calathea rufibarba
When the leaves of Calathea rufibarba get older, they change color. The young leaves have a striking shade between light and dark green that fades with age. The long, narrow leaf shape with wavy edges is striking. The underside of the leaf is colored a beautiful red-violet. The Calathea rufibarba grows up to 60 cm high. Popular varieties are, for example, ‘Wavestar’ or ‘Elger Grass’.

Calathea lancifolia

The striking purple-colored underside of the leaves rounds off the image of Calathea lancifolia. The ‘Insigne’ variety is widespread and can grow up to 60 cm high.
Calathea makoyana
The Calathea makoyana has egg-shaped leaves that stand out with an intense dark green edge. The leaves are mostly shaded light green and show dark green variegation. Calathea makoyana is also known as the “peacock basket marante” because the leaf spots are reminiscent of peacock eyes. The foliage of the plant is particularly nested and therefore very dense. It grows up to 75 cm high.
Calathea roseoptica
The rounded leaves of Calathea roseoptica are particularly large, light green, and have a dark green leaf margin. The artistic drawing of the leaves can take on different colors, with the ‘Dottie’ variety, for example, it sets strong pink accents. The underside of the leaf of the up to 50 cm high Calathea roseoptica is purple in color. It is common in large parts of South America. Other popular varieties are, for example, ‘Corona’ or ‘Suprisestar’.
Calathea crocata
The upper side of the leaf of Calathea crocata is blue-green in color, while the underside of the leaf takes on a purple color. It does not have a conspicuous drawing on the leaves. The Calathea crocata is also more likely to develop its yellow-orange flowers in our latitudes. The ‘Bicajoux’ variety is also special because it flowers pink. Another popular variety is the ‘White Star’. Calathea crocata grows to a maximum height of 60 cm.
Calathea leopardina
The Calathea leopardina develops pointed, light green leaves with dark green variegation. It is one of the more subtle Calathea species. The underside of the leaves of the up to 75 cm tall plant is discreetly colored light green.
