Prune shrub and bush roses

In contrast to bedding roses, shrub roses do not require annual pruning. It is perfectly sufficient to think out more flowering varieties in spring (March/April) and remove the old branches to make room for new shoots and prevent disease.

Make sure that the crown is airy and loose, but still has a harmonious appearance. The dead shoots are either removed at the base or shortened to the healthy wood. Weak shoots of shrub roses can be cut back to three or four eyes.

During the summer you can also remove the wilted inflorescences one by one and cut back the shoots a little bit. Single-flowering shrub rose varieties, on the other hand, form their flowers on perennial wood, so you should leave them alone if possible to benefit from a rich flowering in the same year.
