Especially potted plants like yucca regularly need additional nutrients. We show what you should consider when fertilizing Beaked Yucca. All year-round, the Yucca Rostrata provides fresh greenery for home and garden. The plants are used to being the only greenery far and wide because they come from the hot and dry regions of Central and North America. So that the drought-resistant plants also feel comfortable with us, the right care is crucial.

Fertilizing Beaked Yucca: Nutrient requirements

As inhabitants of hot and dry areas of the American continent, the Beaked Yucca often stands quite alone in wide-open fields. Not many plants can withstand these dry conditions and therefore the surrounding vegetation is naturally quite sparse.

As a result, organic material hardly ever reaches the soil, which is why the soil is usually quite poor in humus. Yucca plants is therefore used to particularly stony and sandy mineral soils. These are nevertheless quite rich in nutrients.

However, since it rains only rarely and the nutrients are absorbed especially under humid conditions, the plant does not constantly reach them. Beaked Yucca is therefore accustomed to periods of hunger, but due to their strong growth, they still need some nutrients.

When Should You Fertilize Beaked Yucca?

In principle, you should only fertilize your Beaked Yucca during the growing season. This season starts in spring and ends in September at the latest. However, it is advisable not to fertilize your yucca during the winter. At this time of the year, the plant needs a rest period during which it cannot use any nutrients.

Planted yucca tree usually does not need any additional fertilizer. They are satisfied with what they can get with their roots from the environment. Since you are not harvesting your yucca, you are not depriving the plant and the soil of any nutrients. Accordingly, no new nutrients need to be added.

This is different from potted plants, which have limited root growth. Their nutrient supply is limited to the size of the pot. If the plant is to grow vigorously, you should give it a portion of nutrients about once a month during the growth phase.

What Is Beaked Yucca Fertilized With?

With yucca, the focus is mainly on beautiful leaf growth and less on flowering. For this reason, a fertilizer with a relatively high nitrogen content is a good choice. Phosphorus is therefore not particularly important. In general, yucca is one of the few plants that is often watered with harder tap water. The lime contains covers the plant’s need for calcium.

Fertilizing Beaked Yucca Organically

Solid organic fertilizers contribute to humus formation in the soil. This is in principle very good but does not quite correspond to the natural preferences of the Beaked Yucca. Nevertheless, you do not have to do without organic fertilization. You can easily supply your plant with a liquid fertilizer every three weeks. The liquid fertilizer Citrus & Mediterranean from Gardender, for example, is ideal for providing the plant with sufficient nutrients and producing lush green leaves.

A homemade alternative, however, is the regular use of nettle liquid manure, which – also diluted like the liquid fertilizer – supplies your Beaked Yucca with water. When to stop fertilizing your house plant before wintering depends on the location.

Nettle (Urtica dioica) is rich in nitrogen. Pour water over fresh nettle leaves and leave to stand for about two weeks, stirring regularly

Mineral Fertilizer For Beaked Yucca

For Beaked Yucca you can use a variety of green and plant fertilizer. Special fertilizers are not necessary, because it depends solely on the ratio of N (nitrogen), P (phosphorus), and K (potassium). Nitrogen is crucial for rapid growth, phosphorus promotes flower formation and potassium has an influence on the water balance and winter hardiness of the plant. For potted plants, the choice of a liquid fertilizer is recommended.

Fertilizing Beaked Yucca with household remedies

Liquid fertilizers are also regularly produced in the household as a sideline. An often underestimated factor is, for example, the nutrient content in the cooking water. Potatoes and other vegetables release nutrients into the surrounding water during the cooking process. But these do not have to be lost. Simply give the cooled cooking water to your yucca – it will thank you for it.

You should not dump the cooking water of potatoes and other vegetables in the future

Fertilizing Beaked Yucca – in brief:

  • Grows naturally in soils poor in humus and rich in minerals.
  • Fertilization during the growing season from spring to late summer/autumn.
  • As a rule, planted out plants do not need to be fertilized.
  • Liquid fertilizer is very well suited.
  • Nettle liquid manure and cooking water are alternatives to mineral fertilizers.
  • Use tap water for watering to meet the calcium needs of the plant.
